The Real Problem May Be Your Neural Networks

Have you ever felt this way?

You never miss Sunday service. You know the songs. You can quote Bible verses. You can even share a few insights during Bible study. But the moment you turn around, your temper is still the same temper, your greed is still the same greed. Late at night, your heart is crying, “Don’t look, don’t look,” yet your fingers act as if they don’t belong to you and open that website you know you shouldn’t.

Then the doubts start:

Have I never really been born again?

Has God given up on me?

Or am I just the kind of person who can never change?

Don’t rush to judge yourself.

The problem may not be whether your faith is real or fake. It may be something you’ve never paid attention to: the neural networks in your brain.

1. Two Thousand Years Ago, Paul Already Described Your Situation

“But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”

— Romans 7:23

Paul didn’t know neuroscience. Yet the Holy Spirit used him to write exactly what every believer experiences today.

The word “law” here is not a legal code. It refers to a principle that continually exerts control. “Warring” is a military term — a long, repeated battle between two sides. “Bringing into captivity” means being captured and controlled.

In today’s language: a stronger neural network has seized control of your body.

2. Every Habit Is a “Road” in Your Brain

Memories, beliefs, instincts, habits, and behaviors all exist in the form of neural networks in the nervous system. The stronger the network, the greater its control over behavior. The weaker it is, the less control it has.

A person who has never known what pornography is will never have the thought of watching it — because that pathway simply doesn’t exist in their brain.

The problem is that in the decades before you came to Christ, pride, greed, lust, and selfishness had already built expressways in your nervous system. A single small impulse can light them up instantly and turn into action.

And after you believed?

Reading the Bible, praying, going to church, worshiping — these are still only narrow paths that have just been stepped out. When temptation comes, the nerve signals naturally take the old road.

This does not mean your new birth was fake.

New birth is the awakening of the spirit, not the instant maturity of the life.

A newly born-again person is like a newborn baby. The spirit is alive, but it is still very small and cannot yet fully control behavior. So there will be weakness and failure.

3. A Heart-Piercing Truth: God Has Not Left You

Jesus said:

“The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”

— John 6:63

Therefore, the part of the neural network that carries the words of God does not carry ordinary information. It carries spirit. It carries life. I call this part the spiritual awareness system. After the Holy Spirit regenerates a person’s spirit, the spirit operates in this system.

Many people have been Christians for years and feel colder and colder. They think God has left them. In reality, most of the time it is not that God has left the person — it is that the spiritual awareness system has gradually fallen into disuse.

When a person stops reading the Bible, stops praying, stops obeying, and stops repenting for a long time, that part of the neural network grows weaker and weaker. In daily life it shows up as increasing dullness and powerlessness toward spiritual things.

Many people try to overcome sin by gritted teeth and sheer willpower. The result is exhaustion and repeated defeat.
