Why Did Modern Science Expel the “Soul” from Serious Study — Yet Can Never Escape “Who Am I”?

Humanity can already see galaxies ten billion light-years away. We can burrow into a single cell and count its genes. In the very instant you recall a memory, we can photograph which patches of your brain light up. We have taken the world apart, finer and finer, until almost nothing can block our gaze.

And yet there is one question that sits closer to us than any of these, and we have never truly answered it—

What, exactly, am I?

From the day you first opened your eyes, you have lived as an “I.” It is I who see, I who hear, I who remember childhood, I who am reading this line right now. The strange thing is, the harder you press on this “I,” the more it slips through your fingers. The eyes can see, but the eyes are not “I.” The hands can move, but the hands are not “I.” Even your most familiar memories, emotions, and character are only phenomena that happen to this “I”—not the “I” itself. So who is it that possesses all of this?

Thousands of years ago, humanity left a name for this subject: the soul.

Here is what is strange: the closer we came to the modern age, the stronger our ability to study ourselves grew—and yet this oldest of questions quietly withdrew from serious science. Not because it had been solved. To understand how it was driven out, you have to see a sleight of hand that most people overlook.

When modern science first arose, it did not begin by denying the soul. Newton, Kepler, and Pascal all lived in an age when faith still ran deep; studying the laws of physics and believing in the soul posed no conflict for them. The real turning point came after science began to succeed. How the heart pumps blood, how muscles contract, how nerves carry signals—one after another, these were explained by physical mechanism. From this a natural thought arose: if so much of the body can be explained by matter, then perhaps the whole of human life can be explained the same way. And so, step by step, the human being was recast as an extraordinarily complex biological machine.

Observation, measurement, repetition, verification—these principles are not wrong. It is precisely by them that humanity swept out so much superstition and error. The real problem lay elsewhere: the boundary of method was quietly turned into the boundary of existence.

A thing that can be measured now enters science; a thing that cannot, for the moment, is set outside the door. That, in itself, is only a choice of method. But take one more step—turn it into “whatever cannot be measured now, there is no reason to think it exists”—and the whole character of the claim changes.

The first says: I have no way to study it yet.
The second says: It does not exist.

These are two entirely different conclusions, separated by a cliff of logic. Do not forget: a great many things we can study today were, in the past, impossible to measure. Instruments limit what a given age can see; they do not get to decide what the world is allowed to contain. The soul was shown out of science’s door precisely through this misunderstood boundary.

But here is the more haunting fact: the name was driven out; not one of its questions left with it.

The whole question of the soul was broken into a pile of smaller ones—consciousness, memory, emotion, cognition, the self, personality, free will, subjective experience. Each fragment is studied deeply, yet the original question is left unattended. We study memory, but rarely ask again: who is remembering? We study emotion, but rarely ask again: who is in joy and in pain? We study choice, but rarely ask again: in the end, who made the decision?

And here is the most ironic scene of all: the scientist himself cannot do without this subject. To study the brain, he must first think; to pose a question, he must judge; to design an experiment, he must imagine; to face conflicting views, he must choose; to sustain a direction for years, he must will. He is using a whole subject—one that thinks, judges, and chooses—to study how thinking, judging, and choosing are produced. Yet when it comes time to write the conclusion, that very subject, the one living through it all, is left outside the model, leaving only a string of neurons, a set of chemical changes, and a few brain regions.

That an emotion is accompanied by certain neural activity is a fact; but to conclude from this that “these neural activities already explain who is feeling it” is another layer—an interpretation. And in the gap between the two hides that skipped-over “I.”

So the soul’s departure from the language of science never meant the problem of the soul was solved. It only meant the problem was broken apart, given a fresh set of names, and left to go on living.

This is exactly what Soulology sets out to do—to put back together what was broken apart, and to pull that complete “I” back to the very center of study.

And this book means to go one step further. It has no intention of dragging you back to ghosts and mysticism, nor is it content merely to re-pose the question. It means to give “Who am I” an answer that can actually be spelled out: the “you” who is seeing, thinking, remembering, and choosing is neither a wisp of ghost hidden inside the body nor an illusion that the brain’s activity happens to throw off—you are the single, whole electromagnetic field formed by the continuous firing of the tens of billions of neurons in your nervous system. It is like a flame, like a tornado: the stuff inside is forever being exchanged, yet the whole remains one and the same. This book calls such an existence an electromagnetic form-life. It is real. It grows. It can fall ill. And it runs by laws of its own.

Why does it matter so much to get this clear? Because how a person understands himself is how he will understand his own desires, his pain, his choices, his relationships—and, in the end, how he will live out his one life.

Humanity has built so vast a civilization; there is no reason to leave the very person who created all of it standing outside the door of knowledge forever. This book exists to spell out, once more, the most ordinary and most vital thing of all:
